One Bold Couple, Five New Disciples

One Bold Couple, Five New Disciples

*Aninda and her husband came to faith a couple of years ago and became bold witnesses to their families about the change Jesus Christ brought to their lives. Then three of their four parents became Christ-followers.

Shortly thereafter, Aninda’s aunt and cousin attended a celebration of Jesus’ birth with other people from their ethnic group. Their eyes were opened that they could follow Jesus and not deny their ethnicity.

Seeing this openness, Aninda and a close friend, *Gemi, began studying about the prophets and Jesus with these two ladies. The cousin’s husband abandoned his family after his wife started learning about Isa al Masih (Jesus). One night Jesus appeared to her in a dream, bringing her comfort.  Shortly after this both the aunt and the cousin received Jesus as their Savior and Lord and they now plan to be baptized.

A few weeks later while Aninda and Gemi were visiting a neighboring town, they met *Salsa and invited her to learn about the prophets and Jesus. At the conclusion of each story they asked her, “How will you obey this story and who will you tell?

Weeks of this pattern passed, and one day Salsa realized that her attitudes were changing. She also observed that of her various communities, only the community of genuine followers of Jesus showed love to each other.

Salsa has given her life to Jesus and wants to be baptized!

Pray that God would give each one the courage to follow through with this decision to be baptized.

Be Patient . . .

Be Patient . . .

Standing for two hours in the bitter cold was not what *Erden had envisioned for his night. After all, he had been invited to come back and share more Bible stories with *Yul’s family. Frankly, Erden wanted to give up, but he felt God telling him, “Be patient.” To pass the time, Erden reflected on the training he was receiving from *Stephen, a Beyond movement catalyst, and how his homework had gotten him here in the first place.

The training was on Jesus’ greatest command: love God with all your heart, and be a witness to that love by talking about it at all times, seeking those interested in knowing more about Him. The students’ homework had been to put into practice the simple strategies they had learned by going into the local community, sharing stories of what God had recently done in their lives with three or four non-believers. If that person wanted to hear more, they were asked to gather family and friends the following night so they could listen to the “God stories” as well.

The night before, Erden had been excited when Yul, a restaurant owner, had invited him back to share more stories with himself and his family. But tonight, while Erden had waited outside for the restaurant to shut down, he felt Yul had been ignoring him. Finally, Yul had come over to him and said, “I will take you to my son’s house.” Together they went to the son’s house, but after waiting outside for an hour, there was no sign of Yul’s son. Erden prayed about what to do:

“Be patient.”

Before long, Yul spoke up, “I will bring you to my brother’s house instead.” When they arrived, Yul’s brother and his wife welcomed them inside. As they started talking, the three men realized they had grown up in the same village! Yul’s brother even remembered Erden’s childhood nickname and what a naughty boy he had been. Erden shared how God had changed his life and told them there were many more stories of God changing people’s lives in the Bible.

All three were open to hearing the stories. Erden started with Genesis chapter one and did a Discovery Bible story with them. The family was so eager to learn that they did Genesis two as well. As the night was drawing to a close, Erden asked, “If these stories are true, what do you need to do differently in your lives?” Yul was the first to reply, “If God really loves us, then I need to love myself too.” He decided to stop getting drunk, and start taking better care of himself. His brother said, “I will make a decision to trust God.” The brother’s wife said, “I will pray to God to heal my sickness, and trust God. Will you pray for me?” Erden did, of course, and after the prayer, they all agreed that they needed to continue reading the Bible together!

Erden was so excited with what happened by merely doing his homework that he now has a vision of starting a house church in each village of his country.

Praise God with us that during this five-day training at least 8-10 new DBS groups started in this remote area near Siberia.

WAYS TO PRAY:

  • Pray that these students would continue to apply their training, grow in the Word, and eagerly witness to those around them by sharing stories of God’s love.
  • Pray for Erden as he seeks to implement his vision, bringing God’s glory to his country.

The Unseen Purpose of a Monsoon Season

The Unseen Purpose of a Monsoon Season

*Lakshmi was the first person ever to wash *John’s feet. She and her family are migrant workers from a very poor brick-making caste in India.

Lakshmi poured some of their precious water over John’s feet and wiped them with her hands. John wept unashamedly. As she washed, Lakshmi thanked Jesus for John and the message he had shared. You see, John hadn’t just preached to the brick-makers. He had spent time with them. He had eaten their food and drunk their water. He had shown them how to follow the God who loves them and knows them by name. Lakshmi and several others soon became beloved co-laborers with John in their community.

A few months later, monsoon season arrived. While the farmers rejoice at the rains, brick-makers cringe. They can’t work until the rains end. Since they couldn’t work, the brick-making families decided to go back home to see family.

But when Lakshmi and the other leaders shared their plans with John, he was sad and confused. Why leave? A year ago, when they arrived, they had been idol worshipers. Now there were 17 house churches among the 40 families of the community. “Why go home?” he asked. “Please stay. We can pray and wait out the monsoons. Don’t go.”

These folks love John as much as he loves them, but they knew they had to leave. That was six weeks ago.

John recently learned that each of the 17 families has started at least one new Bible study in homes among their family and friends back home. Their departure didn’t make sense before, but now John knows that God had a plan to use all of them in their home state. They planted churches in a previously unreached place. Now John looks forward to the families’ return in early October. What a joy it will be to rejoice together over what God did during their months apart!

We all too easily think we know best what other people should do. But in making disciples of all nations, our recurring question must be: Whose disciple am I making – my own or His? To make disciples of Jesus, we all, like John the Baptist, must decrease so that Jesus can increase.

A Tiny Spark Can Set a Great Forest Fire

A Tiny Spark Can Set a Great Forest Fire

The apostle John tells us that after following Jesus for a short while, Philip went to find his brother Nathanael to tell him that he and Andrew had found The One the prophets had written about. He said, His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth. Nathanael, like brothers everywhere, questioned his brother’s announcement with, Nazareth! Can anything good come from Nazareth? Instead of arguing with him, Philip wisely invited Nathanael to come and see (John 1:43-49). How we wish we could extend to you the same invite. Great things are happening in India! Here is one example.

There was a Hindu family in K Village in North India. After eight or nine failed attempts at making a marriage match for their eldest son, they despaired of ever seeing him married. The disgrace of so many rejections clung to the mother like ivy on a tree. Like good, Hindu mothers everywhere, the mother in this family believed that marriages occurred at the pleasure of the gods. Why did her god not care for her? Why could he not see their plight?

Disheartened, the mother stopped worshiping at the local temple. She watched her eldest son become depressed, and then start to drink. Meanwhile, her second son, Mohit*, was despairing for his own future. How would he ever marry with this shame hanging over not just his brother, but the whole family?

One day, a friend of Mohit’s invited him to come with him to visit another village where a house church was meeting. Mohit had never taken part in a Bible study discussion before. At first, he was shy, but soon he grew bold to not only answer questions posed to the group, but also ask his own questions. He loved it. Mohit’s friend finally said, “You can speak boldly and you know many things and speak well. Why not join this group?”

Why not, indeed? Mohit returned the next week. He loved the give-and-take of the Discovery Study process. When he arrived home that night, he told his mother about that night’s discussion. She asked, him, “What are you doing? Where is this meeting? What do you do there?” Mohit told her all about it, confessed to really enjoying the discussions, and ended with, “You should go because many good things are there. Our whole family should go.”

And so they did. Mohit’s whole family attended the house church worship service with him. However, on their way home after the meeting, his mother seemed unfazed. No reaction. Had she enjoyed it? Was she offended? Mohit said, “Ma, we should call the leader to come pray for us. My friend says these are good people. I believe all our problems will go away [if they pray for us].”

Little did Mohit know, his mother was quiet during their walk home because she was thinking about an unmarried girl she’d seen at the meeting. After some time, Mohit’s mother and father admitted that they didn’t want to join the group, but they did want to meet with the leader. He visited them in their home, and then, yes, he helped them with the match. Seven months later, Mohit’s older brother married the girl from the meeting. Mohit’s mother exclaimed, “This is a good miracle!” Soon after the wedding, Mohit’s entire family were baptized!

Today Mohit’s mother is excited. She shares with anyone who will listen about Jesus and the changes He made in her family. She tells them, “You don’t have to put your faith in Jesus or believe, but you do have to hear these stories!” To date, Mohit’s mother has shared about Jesus in five other villages, seen 20 Discovery groups started, and has seen whole families baptized together.

In the grand scheme of things, the story of Mohit’s family is pretty small. What is one family compared to a population of 1.3 billion? I read recently that if 1 second is 1 second, 1 billion seconds is 30 years. That’s a huge difference! So, what is one family’s story worth?

Jesus’ brother, James, wrote about small things. He said, a tiny spark can set a great forest fire (James 3:5). Please join us in praying that families like Mohit’s will cause a “forest fire” of love and joy to sweep over the peoples of South Asia.

A Bold Witness

*Yeng is Khmer (most Khmers are Buddhist) who comes from a big family. Her husband, Pouch, is blind; her 97 years old mother-in-law and three grandsons all live with her. Yeng works hard to provide for the needs of her family. Every day she sells green leaves at the market to support her family. It is not much, but with the money that she earns from selling these leaves, she is able to provide meals for her family.

Recently, while Yeng was at the market a lady, who is also really poor, came by to visit. Yeng kindly shared some of her vegetables with her visitor. After the visitor left, the seller who sits near Yeng asked her why she would give food away for free like she had. She asked, “Are you a Christian?”

Immediately, Yeng said: “Yes, I believe in Jesus”. To which the seller replied: “you are like Jesus.  You have a good heart; you are loving and kind to people”.

Yeng saw this statement as a great opportunity to share about what Jesus had done on the cross for all mankind. At the end of the conversation, the seller said: “I believe in Jesus too, but I don’t have a heart like yours. I’m so busy with my work, that sometimes I don’t feel close to God.  My family does not believe in Jesus yet, and often they pray to our ancestors, and sometimes I do that too.”

“No, you cannot worship ancestors; they are not God you need to worship the ONE and TRUE God who is our Lord Jesus Christ only”, said Yeng. The chatted a little more and Yeng invited the seller to the house church that meets in her home. The seller promised that she would come when she had time. Pray for Yeng, that she would continue in her bold witness for the Lord and that she would remain an example of His love and kindness. Pray for Yeng’s friend, that she will seek Yeng out for more conversations about God.
