Help Me Understand How Things Fit Together

Help Me Understand How Things Fit Together

Karly* is acclimating to a new country where the Lord has called her to serve. Almost daily, she follows a set of prompts that help her explore and pray for her new city. Recently, she was guided to a historical seaside neighborhood to prayer-walk and ask the Lord for someone to interact with.

As she walked along the wooden planks, Karly heard someone calling, “Hello! Hello!” Turning, she saw a man on his porch, smiling and waving. They chatted for a few minutes over his front gate. Soon Andrew invited Karly to come in and see his home.

In the front room, his aunt was resting on the floor. Andrew* showed Karly pictures of his grandparents, the original immigrants of his family from China, who had built the place. He showed her his family’s gods, including Buddha and Mazu, a goddess of the sea.

After talking about his family gods, he turned to Karly and said, “You’re a Christian, right?” Karly acknowledged that she is a follower of Jesus. Andrew shared that he had visited a few churches out of curiosity. “Sorry, please excuse me for saying this, but it all seemed empty rituals and academic lecture. I don’t mean to offend you. I just share my perspective as an outsider.” Andrew had approached the different pastors after visiting each service to ask questions. “But it seemed they just wanted me to ‘surrender’ or to give me more lectures. I just want to discuss. I have an Asian mind. I need to understand how things fit together.”

Karly told him that she and her friends like to discuss the Bible at home. She asked if he and his family would be interested in this. Andrew gladly accepted and invited her to come back two days later. At the appointed time, Karly and friend from her house church arrived at Andrew’s home. Together they read the story of a paralyzed man healed by Jesus (Mark 2). Andrew loved how Karly and her friend worked together to act out the story and then retold it in their own words.

Andrew immediately told the story to his aunt, who cannot walk well. He asked her if she would let them pray for her healing. Upon realizing the prayer was free, unlike the prayers from the Buddhist monks and shamen, she agreed. Karly prayed as Andrew translated for his aunt. “The real cat is the one who catches the mouse,” said Andrew’s aunt as a way of explaining why they pray to several different gods and are then willing to devote themselves to the one that answers prayer.

Each week Andrew shared the stories Karly shared with several people and sent them on to others. Recently, however, it’s been hard for Karly to meet with Andrew. Please pray for Andrew’s availability and interest to grow so he might be a conduit for many to hear the good news and become disciples of Jesus.

No More Searching, They Seek Us Out

No More Searching, They Seek Us Out

A few months ago, Tahir* and three other Followers of Isa al Masih (Jesus the Messiah) were sitting together when Ustad Khan (an Ustad is one who preaches Islam) confronted Tahir. In a stern voice, the Ustad asked, “What is this video about?” Somehow he had gotten his hands on Tahir’s phone and had seen a video of the baptism of five new followers.

Tahir was initially taken aback as he had meant to erase that particular video. Usually, this type of encounter brought a fair amount of apprehension; but not this time. Joy and peace filled Tahir’s heart as he began to share about his experiences with God.

“I have been searching for the way to salvation for 15 years. I have been part of Jihad for years, and many of my brothers have died in the process. Mohamed gave us his life as a guide to bring us to Jihad and promises the 70 Virgins. But Isa al Masih gave his life as the sacrifice to give us the way to salvation and heaven. He is the Kalimatullah (The Word of God)—the Quran tells us this. And the Kitab (Bible) tells us His words. God’s words flow out of His mouth. We follow Isa al Masih because he is the Straight Path. These young men were not forced to (be baptized). They decided to do this on their own. It is a step of obedience as they choose to be a follower of Isa al Masih—it is the Label/Sign/Seal of a follower of Isa.”

Ustad Khan had nothing to say in reply to Tahir’s testimony and, sadly, has not yet become a Follower of Christ. Nevertheless, God has been moving in the community! One of Ustad Khan’s friends, a fellow Muslim preacher, heard the Good News, chose to follow Isa al Masih and was himself recently baptized!

But that’s not all!

For many years followers have been praying for the “local commander” of the area. Commander Doud is the head of the local Muslim militia to which all males belong. He has defended the followers in the past because he has witnessed their loving lifestyle. Still, his powerful position has resulted in some fear among the followers. Recently Commander Doud approached Tahir and asked him very seriously, “Why haven’t you started a group sharing these stories from the Kitab with me?”

Excitedly, Tahir shared all these things with his mentor, Kyle, a Beyond movement catalyst saying, “Brother, we have been pushing ourselves to go out and search for possible People Of Peace, but now they are searching for us!”

  • Please be praying that Ustad Khan and Commander Doud will receive the Good News and become Followers of Isa al Masih.
  • Pray for Kyle, Tahir, and all the Followers as it is still dangerous to share Christ where they live. Pray that they would continue to shine Isa al Masih’s peace, love and grace in the midst of a fearful and sometimes violent cultural context.
  • Pray that they will constantly be listening to the Holy Spirit, ready to follow His lead at all times so that a Movement will break out among these people.

Can A Christian Follow Jesus?

Can A Christian Follow Jesus?

Imagine what it is like to be part of an unreached people group.  Few of your people have ever heard the Good News about Jesus, and likely don’t know a Christian who can tell them. Your people group is probably Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist, with religious practices and traditions deeply embedded in your culture and identity.

When you think of Christianity, you picture a western religion and all the negative things you’ve seen in the media from the west: loose morals, alcohol consumption, violence. You shudder at those things and are thankful for your daily prayers and other rituals. Even so, you don’t feel peace from God. Imagine, what barriers or obstacles might you face to becoming a true follower of Jesus?

A couple of years ago, a missionary was visiting some new followers of Jesus, deep inside a Muslim people group.  He was the first Westerner they had met because they had been discipled by another Muslim background believer from their own people group.

As the missionary sat down and visited with these believers, he was intrigued. He asked, what did they call themselves? Did they identify as Christians? Or as something else, such as a Muslim follower of Jesus?

Shocked at the suggestion, one of the new believers exclaimed, “Can a Christian follow Jesus?!” You see, he had learned to love and obey God through studying the Bible. Maintaining his cultural identity, he was a true disciple of Jesus but did not identify his newfound beliefs with Christianity, which was considered by his people group to be the “immoral ‘religion’ of the west.”

Too often in missions and the church, we expect new believers to take steps beyond what the Bible prescribes for true disciples of Jesus. Sometimes that can feel like they are being asked to become more like us, rather than more like Jesus.

Make Disciples of ALL Nations

Make Disciples of ALL Nations

Though often overlooked, “all” is a compelling word referring “to the whole quantity or extent.” It is a word Jesus used in commissioning His Bride, the Church: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations (“ethne”-people groups), baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you.”

Of course, “all” includes people groups which are difficult to reach. Perhaps you can think of regions around the world which are harder to gain access to for one reason or another.

There is a country in East Asia, which, according to Open Doors, has been the number one most dangerous country in which to be a Christian for 18 years in a row. God, however, is raising up a team that spans many nationalities and agencies to reach these loved people. Together they are creating and implementing plans to reach all people from this nation.

Presently, the team is sharing the gospel with those who were able to escape the regime and live elsewhere. They are teaching them to reach their own people, who have also left, and start their own house churches. By teaching them the skills to reproduce evangelism, reproduce leaders, and reproduce house churches, they can reach everyone like themselves, who have also left this country. When the country begins to open (whether slowly or catastrophically), they will all return to their families and villages, bringing the love and truth of Christ with them. Having been taught simple, reproducible models of house church, they will plant churches, everywhere they go.

The vision isn’t just to reach some of these people, it’s a challenge to reach ‘all’ of them. Some may choose to look at the obstacles and the politics, and say ‘it’s impossible.’ Others, however, will stand as Caleb did, believing they will be saved, simply because God promised that one day, ‘all’ peoples would be standing before his throne. If we believe God’s promise, we are assured God will make a way for them.

HOW YOU CAN PRAY

  • Pray with us for these new believers as they process through their experiences and move into wholeness in Christ.
  • Pray for more laborers who would join this team.
  • Pray as they learn how to evangelize, disciple their peers, and plant churches that plant churches for the glory of God.
  • Pray that God would open doors in their country that no man can shut.
  • And pray that all living in the dark would soon get to embrace the Light of the World.
Lessons from a Movement

Lessons from a Movement

A Disciple Making Movement, or DMM, is an unusual concept for many westerners. Growing up in predominantly Christianized cultures, we can find it difficult to grasp how quickly the Church can spread in areas it hasn’t previously permeated. What, even, is a movement? David Garrison defined a movement as “a rapid multiplication of indigenous churches planting churches that sweeps through a people group or population segment.”  Perhaps it is best understood through the following example from India.

Reshma* was invited by her neighbor to participate in a Discovery Bible Study. The woman was aware of the poor situation in Reshma’s marriage, but, as a follower of Jesus, she knew God could meet all of Reshma’s needs. Through the story of creation, Reshma understood for the first time that there was a God above all gods, a true God who loves her, and she received the Good News as dry soil receives the rains. When Reshma began sharing her newfound belief, she encountered persecution from her husband. She stood firm, however, and God’s grace sustained her and brought about an improvement in Reshma’s marriage. (Read Reshma’s story here.)

Madhu*, a relative, noticed the positive change in Reshma’s husband and said, “(He) seems changed. Are you doing something different with him?” Excitedly, Reshma told her of all that God had done. Madhu was so impressed by His ability to soften and change the heart of Reshma’s husband that she gave her allegiance to God and joined Reshma as a co-laborer in the Kingdom.

Three months later, Madhu shared a Bible story with her neighbor, Maravan, and his whole family. Maravan was an aggressive and rough man who owned a nearby shop which wasn’t doing well. He told Madhu, “If you will pray for me and God brings financial change to my shop, then I will believe this God is true.” Madhu prayed, God blessed Maravan’s shop, and he and his whole family gave their allegiance to God. Soon people began to see that Maravan was a changed man!

Maravan began sharing with many others about the changes that had occurred in his family since they became Christ followers. A friend named Krish and his entire family accepted Christ because of Maravan’s testimony of God’s power. Soon another man and his family became Christians when Krish shared Christ with them!

In only 9 months, 5 generations of believers were birthed in a difficult area in India. From these 5 generations, 42 people have been baptized into the Kingdom! This is essentially what a movement looks like: the Kingdom of God flowing quickly, effectively and naturally along relational lines making an immediate and eternal difference in the lives of those who hear, receive and obey. What could be better than that?
