A Triumph Over Black Magic

A Triumph Over Black Magic

*Narong and *Junta were deeply immersed in the occult practices and folk Buddhism of Thailand when they encountered Jesus and became His disciples.

Narong, in particular, embraced his newfound faith with joy, actively sharing the gospel and leading others to Christ through acts of kindness, personal testimony, and the simple teachings of Jesus.

In Thailand, new disciples of Jesus typically do not face the physical threats and persecution that are common in neighboring communist or Muslim countries. However, a surprising and unsettling threat began to loom over Narong and Junta’s family. Junta fell victim to a mysterious and debilitating illness that grew progressively worse.

Despite multiple blood tests, doctors were baffled by her condition. As Junta’s health deteriorated, the family was forced to make significant adjustments, including changes in their living situation, finances, and ministry. Eventually, her condition became so severe that the church gathered to pray for her, seeking relief from her pain and for her heart to be prepared for what seemed like an imminent death.

During this time of prayer, the wife of their movement catalyst discerned that Junta had been cursed by another woman who sought to take Narong as her husband. Upon investigation, they discovered this to be true. Despite Narong and Junta having been married for over ten years and blessed with two healthy daughters, a well-known shaman had been enlisted by the woman to curse Junta to death.

Narong’s kindness had attracted many spiritually hungry people, but it had also drawn the attention of enemies of Christ, leading to this targeted attack through black magic.

After this revelation, the movement catalyst and his wife led the family in a dedicated season of prayer and fasting. Today, Junta has made a full recovery, and her testimony has become a powerful source of encouragement within the movement, offering hope to those who fear the power of black magic. Narong and Junta’s two daughters have since grown into bold, articulate young leaders within this rapidly expanding movement.

Please pray for their continued witness to the spiritually hungry people they encounter.

Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong or Loi Krathong (ลอยกระทง), also known as Thailand’s Festival of Lights, is one Thailand’s biggest festivals. This year, it will take place on November 13-16. This traditional Siamese festival has been celebrated annually for generations, to pay respect to the Goddess of Water and seek forgiveness from her. Nowadays, Thais celebrate it as a way to get rid of negativity and welcome good fortune in the coming year.

The word Loy means “to float” and Krathong translates to “basket” or “boat.” A krathong is a small, decorative float made primarily from banana leaves, traditionally resembling a lotus flower or small boat. The krathong is customarily adorned with candles, flowers, incense sticks, small offerings, and coins.

The floating krathongs carry the hopes, wishes, and gratitude of individuals as they navigate rivers, lakes, or canals during the festival. While not a public holiday, it is celebrated nationwide.

Thai people begin the festival by making their krathongs at home with friends and family, although these days many buy them from local shops.

At dusk, people gather near rivers, lakes and canals with their decorated krathongs. They light candles and incense before gently releasing the krathongs onto the water. This symbolizes the release of negativity and honors the water spirits. It is believed that if the krathong remains lit until it disappears from sight, it will bring good luck for the following year.

Ways to Pray for the Thai People during this Festival:

  • Pray that Thai people worldwide would come to know the true Light of the world, Jesus Christ.
  • Pray for missionaries working among Thai people, that during this festival the Holy Spirit will guide them to people of peace who can open their homes and families to learn about the God who gave His life for them.
  • Pray that Thai people would know the freedom that only Jesus can bring.

Ordinary People Making Disciples of Jesus

Ordinary People Making Disciples of Jesus

When Peter and John addressed the Sanhedrin after Jesus’ resurrection, the assembly marveled at their boldness, noting  that they were “unschooled, ordinary men.” In a world that often associates spiritual authority with advanced education, Jesus bestowed spiritual authority on ordinary people who had been with him.

Consider the incredible story of *Achara, an ordinary Isaan (Thai) villager who, with boldness and courage, shared her faith.

Achara, a shy woman with a fourth-grade education, embraced Christianity two decades ago. Despite faithfully attending every Christian gathering in her area, she had hesitated to take her faith beyond the confines of these meetings. However, last April, everything changed.

During a village outreach, Achara partnered with some bold Lao women who fearlessly explained the message of Jesus as they visited households. Inspired by their courage and testimonies, Achara, realizing their ordinary backgrounds, decided to continue sharing about Jesus upon returning home. She soon connected with *Jhi, who was grappling with severe health issues and spiritual challenges. Plagued by demonic harassment at night, she suffered from insomnia, leading to mental instability. Additionally, she had diabetes, advanced kidney failure, and swollen aneurysms in her brain.

Four years prior, Jhi’s in-laws had advised her husband, “You need to make serious merit if you expect your wife to live.” Making merit means giving food, money, cloth for robes, etc to monks and temples. Accordingly, Jhi’s husband sought to gain merit by donating six acres of rice paddy land. He raised money to build a Buddhist temple. He organized and led the temple committee and recruited monks to live in the temple. After that, he sold 20 more acres of land to raise money for doctors. Despite these efforts, Jhi’s condition worsened and she grew progressively weaker.

Praise God, Achara felt empowered to share the gospel with Jhi. Daily, Jhi would listen to Achara read the Bible aloud in an outdoor hut, finding peace in the words. With the help of Achara’s husband, they built a shelter by a nearby pond for Jhi, providing a cooler and quieter space for her to rest. Achara continued sharing about Jesus and praying for Jhi’s healing.

After a month, Jhi had gained enough strength to function normally. At this point, she prayed to receive Jesus. The transformation astounded her husband, leading him and their three adult daughters to also become Jesus’s disciples. Jhi’s husband walked away from the temple he had funded and helped build.

A few weeks later, Jhi visited her friend *Peng, who had been in a coma after a severe beating. Just as Jhi had been prayed for, she prayed for Peng’s healing, asking God to stop the trembling hand that had emerged post-coma. God answered the prayer, and Peng’s hand stopped trembling. In response, Peng and her husband decided to follow Jesus.

*Dai, a ministry partner, has trained and actively mentors leaders in the village house church which meets in the home of Achara and her husband. Jhi and Peng’s families and 30 other people regularly attend this house church, started by one ordinary woman who boldly shared her faith in Jesus.

  • Pray God continues to bless Anchara and Jhi as they share Jesus with other women in their village. Pray that many other women are touched by their testimonies and that God continues to answer their prayers for others.
  • Ask that the husbands of these women will boldly share their faith as well. Pray for Jhi’s husband in particular to be a bold witness for Jesus. Pray  that his parents will become followers of Jesus.
  • Pray for people who supported the temple. Ask for a change of heart across the whole subdistrict, as there may be unhappy feelings since Jhi’s husband has walked away.
  • Ask for great joy and love to grow among members of this house church.

Meera’s Momos: Empowerment and Faith

Meera’s Momos: Empowerment and Faith

*Meera’s story is like many others the team in India often hear. She married young to a man her parents chose for her. They now have three children. Meera’s husband has a job. But whatever money he makes goes straight to pay for alcohol.

Alcoholism is a huge problem in India. Social drinking, historically, had no place in India. Alcohol had one purpose only – to get a person drunk. Today, social drinking might be on the rise for the urban elite, but everyone else drinks to get drunk.

One Sunday, Meera began crying during the Sunday worship service. *Sanjay asked why she was crying. Through her tears, Meera shared how tired she was of getting beaten by her alcoholic husband and then, about how hungry she and her children were. Since all the money was going to buy alcohol, they had no money for food.

The church gathered around Meera and prayed for her. Sanjay asked her about ways she could make some money. What about setting up some kind of roadside food stall? Meera admitted that, yes, she was good at making momos (the Tibetan version of Chinese dumplings) but she could not afford to buy a steamer.

Sanjay gleefully explained to us how the church members all pooled their money to buy Meera a momo steamer. These church members are poor. The small building where they meet for worship only has half a roof. Most of them live in one-room homes. In fact, many of the women live in the exact same circumstances as Meera. Yet, they gladly pooled their money until they had the amount necessary ($25.00) for Meera to buy a steamer.

This happened several months ago. Today, Meera’s husband still drinks. However, Meera has set up a momo stall right outside the door of her one-room home. Her sales each day total between $6.00-$9.00.

With no coercion from anyone, but simply out of sheer gratitude, Meera is paying a tithe of her earnings back into the fellowship of people who helped her when she so desperately needed it.

God is still in the business of stepping in and making a way.  Meera is one such example. Please join us in praying for the Meera’s of India. As they are liberated, whole communities will be….and then states….and then the nation!

Small Business Opens Doors to the Unreached

Small Business Opens Doors to the Unreached

*Charlie and *Sarah participated in a retreat with local church planting teams focused on reaching unreached people groups, in their province in Southeast Asia. They were honored to support young leaders by helping them develop and refine business platforms to enhance the effectiveness of their ministry.

These business platforms have the potential not only to generate income, to sustain their lives and ministry (much like Paul’s tent-making) but also to open doors for accessing new, unreached areas. Some platforms even allow ministry to happen within the business itself. Often, these platforms can achieve a combination of these goals.

Over the past 20 years, Charlie and Sarah have started and managed several businesses in Asia and the U.S., with the majority of their financial support still coming from one of these ventures. However, since arriving on their island in Southeast Asia, they hadn’t felt led to pursue this area—until now.

The meetings they attended sparked several ideas, one of which is gaining traction and shows potential for replication with other church planters.

One example is *Netra, a Muslim-background believer struggling to provide for her family. Her husband, handicapped by a stroke, is limited in his ability to help. Netra was making homemade snacks, selling them for 20 cents each, and earning no more than $6 a week. Despite being trained in Disciple Making Movement (DMM) principles, she was overwhelmed by the struggle to make ends meet and had little capacity left for ministry.

In response, Charlie and Sarah helped her start a used clothing business.

Now, each day, Netra travels from village to village, selling used clothes. As villagers browse through the clothing, she engages them in conversation, subtly weaving spiritual topics into the discussion, hoping to find “people of peace.” This new venture has increased her income to $10 or more per day. With her work taking only a few hours, she now has more time to follow up with those who show interest in the Good News, with the goal of starting groups of Jesus Followers.

Pray that Netra remains faithful in using her time for Kingdom work and that the Holy Spirit stirs the hearts of those she shares with.

Next month, Charlie and Sarah will travel to another city in their province to help another team establish another business platform, which has the potential to open doors into nearby villages.

This weekend retreat had rekindled a passion in Charlie and Sarah for using business to advance the Kingdom of God. Please pray for more ideas that will help Kingdom workers generate income and gain access to the unreached communities they serve.
