Do You Go Beyond the Four Walls?

Do You Go Beyond the Four Walls?

Learning the basics of Disciple Making Movements requires a paradigm shift for pastors of well-established denominational churches. The idea of reaching lost people more effectively by going outside the four walls of the church is daunting. Choosing to go to the lost instead of to invite them into church buildings can be a challenge!

But in the Philippines, Alex* continues to coach twelve traditional church pastors in disciple-making principles via Zoom calls. Says Alex, “It’s as if the Lord has blown down the four walls of many of their churches.”

There are now over 70 house churches among this group of pastors! During this time of pandemic restrictions, they have answered the Lord’s call to go. They report that more people are hearing the gospel and being discipled via house churches than when they invited people to church and followed their normal routines. Two of the pastors have 35 and 15 house churches respectively! Another was called before the community “captain” because one of his groups exceeded the community’s present pandemic restrictions. They have since multiplied to become two house churches!

Praise God for moving His Church into the world — and growing it — during this present crisis.

Trusting the Holy Spirit to Speak to my Family

Trusting the Holy Spirit to Speak to my Family

If you’ve ever wondered how to simply, yet effectively disciple people, then our next Nugget training on how to use the Discovery Bible Study (DBS) method is for you. The following is a testimony from a previous attendee of the DBS Nugget training.

I really enjoyed that Nugget training about DBS! After attending that Nugget, I prayed and asked the Lord to send me two or more people to start a group with. On January first, I called my dad, and as he told me about his New Year’s resolutions, he said he would like to put God first this year. (My family are not born-again believers or churchgoers, but my dad is seeking, and the rest of my family is open/ interested in listening.)  When he said that, I offered to start a Bible study at their house. He was all for it! And we actually had our a first DBS gathering about two weeks ago. It went so great! At least I think it did. Everyone was participated, and there were great insights shared, and everyone actively acknowledged (without my help) that they were created to walk in love and obedience to God, who is their Maker. I mean . . . coming from my family, this was crazy cool to be a part of!!

One of my prayers for this gathering was to trust the Holy Spirit to speak to my family, teach and convict them. And this certain Martin Luther quote had just been on my mind, “I did nothing. The Word did everything.” And I prayed about that, for the Word to do everything, and I really felt that’s the best way I could describe that first study. It was awesome seeing the Holy Spirit teach through the Word.  Everyone said they were excited about the next study!

I really enjoyed this method of study SO MUCH! I’ll definitely keep these Stories of Hope handy- thanks for sharing those and for that DBS nugget!

Navigating Difficult Conversations with Family

Navigating Difficult Conversations with Family

The Christmas holidays can often be made more stressful by difficult family members.  Sometimes we gird ourselves up just knowing that that person will be at the family gathering. Ibu Sayang in Indonesia knows how we feel . . .

When “Uncle” called Ibu Sayang to his home for a family gathering, she had no idea of the storm she was going to walk into. Questions about her faith pelted her from every direction. Guided by the Holy Spirit, Sayang was able to share about how she struggled with finding truth and meaning in Islam despite having been on the Hajj (a spiritual trip to Mecca) twice and having earnestly sought God as a Muslim. She shared how, in her frustration, she had cried out one night, “God! Please reveal to me your truth!” Boldly, she told her family of the man with white hair dressed in white robes and a golden sash who appeared in her dreams that night. In his hands this man held a book on which was a large cross with her name written below. He handed her the book, and Ibu Sayang awoke. Immediately, she knew that the man was Isa al Masih (Jesus the Messiah) and that truth was found in him. She confidently explained that the dream was the reason she had removed her traditional Muslim clothing and claimed to be a follower of Jesus.

After hearing all she had to say, Ibu Sayang’s uncle, who is a respected leader in the Islamic community, declared, “If I receive a vision from Allah as you did, I and my whole family will receive Isa al Masih!”

Sayang and her teammates are rejoicing over this announcement and praying for this very thing. They are also in awe of the ready answers the Holy Spirit provided during this tense encounter. Aware that she can only plant seeds while salvation belongs to the Lord, Ibu Sayang has already made an appointment to go back and share more with her family!

As you prepare to meet with your extended families over the upcoming holiday season, please be praying for your Christian brothers and sisters around the world who will be meeting with family and sharing with them why they have chosen to follow Christ. Pray also for Ibu Sayang’s uncle; that the vision he has asked for, he will have.

Giving Thanks Amid the Rubble

Giving Thanks Amid the Rubble

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving this week, we want to share some stories from the earthquake-ravaged region of Austronesia. If you recall, several strong earthquakes hit the island of Indonesia over the summer. They brought devastation, but also opened doors for workers to bring aid, comfort and hope.

Another team reports of the medical help, temporary housing, toilets and physical needs they were able to provide, but, of much greater importance, the trauma counseling, prayers for healing in the name of Isa Al Masih (Jesus the Messiah) and the Discovery Bible Studies (DBS) they were able to hold with hurting people needing a touch from God. They now report that there are over 30 continuing DBS groups with some already starting a second generation!

Mrs. Harum was caught inside her house when the earthquake hit. Her family was with her but able to run out and away from the house. Roofing, beams and walls crashed onto her.

The next day her neighbors found her alive, but paralyzed. Sadly, most of her family were killed. One of our national partners counseled her, her daughter and one granddaughter who survived. After sharing how Isa Al Masih healed the paralyzed man in Mark 2:1-12, Mrs. Harum said, “I believe that story.” She then welcomed prayer for the healing of her leg. After praying in the name of Isa Al Masih, Mrs. H stood up and was able to move her leg! Crying, she embraced the team, amazed at the power of the Holy Spirit. Since then, Mrs. Harum has participated in her second Discovery Bible Study and all of her neighbors have come to her tent to hear the Good News!

This Thursday, as you gather with your family, give thanks with us for the work God is doing in Indonesia and pray that many more Discovery Bible Studies will take place creating a disciple making movement among this people group that God loves so much.

The Power of the Simple Story . . .

The Power of the Simple Story . . .

The Gospel is unstoppable and uncontainable: like a river, it flows despite obstacles and barriers. It penetrates the hard-to-reach places, seeping in because the spreading of the Gospel has nothing to do with man and EVERYTHING to do with God. In this story from the field, our team in South Asia give us a glimpse of how the Gospel continues to spread despite persecution and resistance.
Soma sent us a couple of voice messages last week. One was a recording he took of a conversation he had had with a leader who has been with us almost since the beginning. This man was part of the second group we ever trained. Only two men from that group applied, but–oh, what fruit they have borne! So many generations!

At some point this year, this brother was forced to leave his home. The Hindu radicals in his village simply ran him out. Here’s a brief summary of that conversation between Soma and the leader:
Radical Hindu groups are forcing their way into Christian homes, searching for Bibles. They threaten the people when they find something. They also bring cameras with them and take photos of the Christians in the homes. Discovery Bible Study is proving to be really powerful because it is so simple. But, we must continue to keep it simple. People must just learn the Stories, then the method gets passed along. People must memorize the Stories, instead of carrying a Bible. [In other words, the whole thing must be done orally or with speakers, not with actual Bibles.] When these radical groups find no Bibles, they treat the people better. How great it is to simply discuss a Story, even without a Bible!

I did not hear defeat in their voices. They were just stating the facts while declaring that the Work is continuing/will continue. Hallelujah! It’s a precious thing to realize illiterate followers of Jesus know more Scripture than we do. They’re memorizing the Stories because they have to! We are also praying about how to get more audio speakers (hand held devices with select scriptures and story sets) distributed. Historically, we’ve paid for Bibles and audio speakers from the same fund. Right now, that fund has dropped to the lowest it’s ever been. We’re not sure what that means. Are we to stop buying Bibles because owning one causes trouble for people? Having a speaker in their homes seems to be more innocuous. So, is it time for us to raise more funds to purchase as many speakers as we can? We invite you to pray with us for this.

Join us in prayer for these innovative and resourceful leaders. Pray that we will be able to raise funds to buy more speakers and pray that like a mighty, unstoppable river, the Good News of the Gospel will continue to flow despite the opposition and persecution.
