Hindus in Australia

A Vibrant and Influential Community

A Relationship that Stretches Far Back …

India and Australia share a relationship that stretches back far beyond the European “discovery” of the Australian continent. Some studies suggest that South Asians may have traveled to Australia as early as 2200 BC, with other, more controversial theories proposing even earlier contact. Regardless of how ancient those ties may be, it is clear that the modern South Asian—and specifically Hindu—diaspora in Australia is growing rapidly.

Over the centuries, the Hindu diaspora’s connection with Australia has taken many forms. In the late 1700s, Indian crews from the Bay of Bengal arrived on trading ships, and some South Asians were brought, along with camels, to help explore and guide expeditions across the vast Australian outback. However, in the early 20th century, the White Australia policy sharply curtailed immigration from South Asia, leading to decades of restricted migration.

The situation shifted significantly after the policy was dismantled in 1971. Since then, immigration from South Asia—especially India—has surged. Today, the Indian community is among the fastest-growing migrant groups in Australia. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, nearly 60,000 Indians arrived in Australia during the 2021–2022 period. By some estimates, individuals of Indian ancestry now make up over 3% of the Australian population.

The Hindu diaspora in Australia is now a vibrant and influential community. It is generally younger, more highly educated, and better paid than many other migrant groups. In fact, 54.6% of Indians in Australia hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. Their presence has not only contributed to Australia’s economic vitality but has also enriched its cultural diversity. The diaspora is estimated to number nearly 800,000 people, with the largest concentrations found in Victoria.

Today, Australians generally view the Indian community positively. Many members of the Hindu diaspora are deeply involved in their local communities and continue to play a vital role in strengthening Australia’s global competitiveness.

“Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.” Psalm 2:8

Pray that Hindus in Australia will have profound opportunities to encounter followers of Jesus in their community. (Hebrews 13:2)

Pray that other Australians of South Asian origin, who do know Jesus, will boldly reach out to Hindus in Australia and faithfully share the love of Jesus with them. (Job 31:32)

Pray that Hindus in Australia will be blessed and that their children will have opportunities to live life to its full while discovering the love of Jesus for them and their community. (Acts 17:23)
