Hindus in the Persian Gulf

How Hindu Communities Took Root in the Gulf

Hindu Professionals Shape the Gulf’s Religious Landscape

Although trade between South Asia and the Persian Gulf dates back centuries, significant Hindu communities did not begin to emerge in the region until the oil-driven construction boom of the 1970s. Initially drawn by opportunities in construction, Hindu migrants later began arriving to work in professional sectors such as engineering, healthcare, and financial services.

As these more affluent professionals settled, they played a key role in organizing and funding the construction of temples in countries like Yemen, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman—establishing visible expressions of their faith in the heart of the Gulf.

While some members of the Hindu diaspora, particularly those in skilled industries, have made the Gulf their long-term home, a large portion of Hindu migrants live and work in the region on temporary contracts. These men and women—whether single or married—often leave their families behind in South Asia for extended periods. Through their labor, they send home substantial remittances, sustaining families and communities back home.

Living in the Gulf also brings cultural and spiritual encounters that can shape their worldview. Hindu workers interact regularly with Muslim employers and Christian colleagues, creating a unique environment where they are exposed to beliefs different from their own. For some, this presents an opportunity to hear the message of the gospel—an experience they may carry with them if and when they return to South Asia.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” – Proverbs 9:10

Pray for a continued move of God, as workers from diverse regions and faith mix on the job and in the community, that believers may have the opportunity to share their faith with their Hindu co-workers. (1 Peter 3:15)

Pray that Hindus who discover the love of Jesus while working abroad, will carry their testimony back with them to South Asia and share joyfully and boldly with their families. (Psalm 72:8)

Pray that Hindus who remain in the Persian Gulf will continue to meet followers of Christ who also reside there and that they will meet communities of faith that invite them into a deeper relationship with Jesus, and that they will receive the peace that only Jesus can give. (Mark 16:15)
