The Harvest
Hidden in East Africa
Small But Historically Significant
Long before the colonial era, coastal communities and kingdoms on the western edge of the South Asian subcontinent had already established robust commercial ties with East Africa. These early connections gave rise to what historians often call a “trade diaspora”—a seasonal migration system shaped by the monsoon winds of the Indian Ocean. Merchants and sailors traveled in a circular pattern between South Asia and East Africa, laying the foundation for deep intercultural ties across the region.
In the 19th century, these ties grew stronger as Indian traders and laborers, including many Hindus, began to settle more permanently in East Africa. This migration was fueled in part by British colonial infrastructure projects that relied heavily on indentured Indian labor. One of the most ambitious of these was the construction of the Uganda Railway, stretching from Mombasa, Kenya to Lake Victoria. Though hailed as an imperial triumph, the railway’s completion came at a devastating human cost, with Indian laborers enduring grueling conditions, illness, and loss of life.
Following the railway’s completion, a second wave of Indian migration arrived—this time bringing Hindu traders, teachers, clerks, and administrators to support the growing colonial economy. Their presence helped shape the social and economic landscape of East Africa in lasting ways.
Today, Hindus make up about 0.2% of Africa’s population, with a small but historically significant community in East Africa. Though they may seem like a small and scattered group, no corner of the earth is beyond the reach of God’s love. Let our prayers be sown among these Hindu communities—asking Jesus to reveal His love through Scripture, witness, miracles, and whatever means He chooses. May the seeds of prayer take root in East Africa and bear eternal fruit.
“May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth” – Psalm 67:4
Pray that Hindus in East Africa will have a chance to hear the Good News that in Jesus they can find peace and fulfillment. (Revelation 21:4)
Pray that Hindus will discover Jesus, the Prince of Peace, who knows the needs of Hindu peoples everywhere. (Philippians 4:6)
Pray for Hindus who seek a relationship with the living God, that they will find Jesus and His miraculous gift of liberation from sin. (Acts 17:23)
