A New Chapter
One shaped by choice, mobility, and increasing global influence
A New Chapter in the Global Hindu Story
The third era of Hindu migration—often referred to as the New Hindu Diaspora—began after 1947, following the independence of British India. Unlike earlier waves of forced migration under colonial rule, this new phase was characterized by voluntary immigration. Hindus began moving abroad in search of education, economic opportunities, and in some cases, to escape the violence and instability caused by the Partition of South Asia.
Unlike the Old Diaspora, which was primarily concentrated in colonial plantation economies, the New Hindu Diaspora expanded into new regions that had not previously hosted significant South Asian populations. However, in countries like Malaysia, where an Old Diaspora already existed, the arrival of new immigrants strengthened and expanded those communities.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the global Indian population today stands at approximately 32.1 million, with an estimated 25 million Hindus among them. The strength of the New Hindu Diaspora lies in several key areas:
- Broad geographic spread
- Higher levels of education and professional skill
- Strong ties to India, which help preserve cultural and religious identity
Recognizing the enduring bond between India and its global diaspora, the Indian government introduced a special visa policy in 2002, granting lifelong residency rights to foreign citizens who could trace their ancestry—up to three generations—to India. This policy was later expanded to include descendants of indentured laborers, acknowledging the historical significance and contribution of the Old Hindu Diaspora as well.
This third wave marks a new chapter in the global Hindu story—one shaped by choice, mobility, and increasing global influence, while still deeply rooted in the traditions of the homeland.
“Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty’” John 6:35
Pray that Hindus in this New Hindu Diaspora will follow Christ and will be a witness to the many Unreached People Groups that they are connected to in India. (1 John 3:1)
Pray that the children of Hindus who have settled and established themselves in various lands around the world, would discover the good news of Jesus and turn to him in their youth, so they have a lifetime to share Jesus’ great love for Hindu peoples. (Isaiah 40:11)
Pray that the great light of Jesus and His wonderful love would shine upon Hindu communities around the world and that they would be drawn to His matchless grace. (2 Corinthians 4:3)
