FEB 13| VIENTIANE

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light  Ephesian 5:8

Vientiane, the capital of Laos, blends French-colonial architecture with iconic Buddhist landmarks, such as the golden, 16th-century Pha That Luang, a revered national symbol. With a population of just one million, this city feels more like a large town than the bustling urban centers familiar to many Westerners. Laos, a landlocked and impoverished nation, is among the poorest in Southeast Asia.

Since 1975, Laos has been governed by a Communist regime that initially declared Christianity an “enemy of the state.” This forced many Christians to flee the country, while those who remained practiced their faith underground. Although Christianity is now recognized as one of four government-approved religions, churches operate under strict surveillance, and persecution persists, particularly at the local level.

In 2020, 52% of Laos’ population identified as Theravada Buddhist, while 43% followed polytheistic ethnic religions. The government categorizes three groups as “Christian”: the Lao Evangelical Church, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and the Roman Catholic Church. All religious groups must register with the Ministry of Home Affairs, and public proselytizing is strictly forbidden.

HOW YOU CAN PRAY

  • Pray that Lao seekers will have the courage to break free from societal pressures to practice Buddhism and instead place their hope in the one true God.
  • Ask God to empower believers to boldly and unashamedly share the gospel with their neighbors, even under the watchful eyes of government authorities.
  • Lift up house church leaders who face targeted persecution. Pray that the Lord would strengthen them with grace, endurance, and unwavering faith.
  • Ask God to soften hearts in a city where Buddhism is woven into daily life and national identity. Pray that individuals would become curious about Jesus and open to exploring the hope He offers.
  • Lift up the small number of local believers and long-term workers in Vientiane. Pray that their lives, kindness, and integrity would reflect Christ in ways that spark meaningful conversations about faith.
  • Many Buddhists in Laos participate in rituals out of obligation or fear of offending spirits or ancestors. Pray that God would bring peace, break spiritual strongholds, and reveal the freedom found in Christ.
