FEB 15 | YANGON

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. – Deuteronomy 31:8

Though no longer Myanmar’s capital, Yangon (formerly Rangoon) remains the country’s largest city, with a population exceeding seven million. Its skyline is a striking blend of British colonial architecture, modern high-rises, and gilded Buddhist pagodas, reflecting its rich history and evolving identity.

Yangon is renowned for having the largest collection of colonial-era buildings in Southeast Asia, with a remarkably well-preserved urban core. At the heart of this district stands the Sule Pagoda, believed to be over 2,000 years old. The city is also home to the iconic Shwedagon Pagoda, Myanmar’s most sacred and renowned Buddhist site.

Christianity has established a foothold in Yangon, with 8% of the population identifying as Christians. However, the majority—85%—adhere to Theravada Buddhism, while 4% of the population are Muslims.

Religious conflict has long plagued Myanmar. During British colonial rule, Christianity was often regarded as a foreign influence.

Today, Rohingya Muslims face severe persecution, highlighting the nation’s ongoing struggles with religious and ethnic tensions. These issues are compounded by the ongoing conflict between Myanmar’s military and civilian leadership, often resulting in intensified religious oppression.
