Light Breaks Through in Egypt

Day 13: God’s Light Breaks Through Darkness in Egypt

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  John 8:12

Egypt is home to more than 116 million people, of whom 90% are Muslim and around 10% identify as Coptic Christians. Yet, behind these numbers lies a hidden reality—many Egyptians quietly follow Jesus in secret, risking everything for their faith.

One of them is six-year-old *Ali. He attended a Christian event organized for homeless children, where he first heard about Jesus. Touched by what he learned, Ali boldly declared that he now belonged to Him. Those around him noticed a remarkable change in the little boy—his joy and kindness overflowed.

Ali’s mother was happy to see her son transformed, but not everyone shared her joy. Some threatened to report them to national security. Overnight, what began as innocent faith turned into danger. Ali and his mother were forced to flee their home and hide with relatives.

In Egypt, churches are guarded by police during worship services, yet Muslims are forbidden to convert or even to seek truth outside Islam. Still, nothing can stop Jesus from reaching those who seek Him with all their hearts.

The cost of following Christ is steep. Converts risk losing their jobs, families, inheritance—and sometimes even their lives.

One such believer is *Amir, a respected Muslim doctor who met Jesus through the quiet witness of a Christian neighbor. Despite being mocked and mistreated, the neighbor never lost his composure and continued to serve others with compassion. Amir couldn’t ignore the difference—what kind of faith could produce such peace and love?

That question led him to Christ. Yet Amir cannot openly share his faith. His wife comes from a devout Muslim family, and his children study at Al-Azhar University, the heart of Islamic missionary training. So he believes in secret—but his heart is free.

Even in the face of fear and persecution, God’s light continues to break through Egypt’s darkness.

HOW WE CAN PRAY

  • Seekers of truth: Ask God to reveal Himself through dreams, visions, Scripture, and encounters with believers to those who are genuinely searching for Him.
  • Pray for secret believers: Lift up those who follow Jesus in silence and fear. Pray for their courage, spiritual growth, and for safe opportunities to fellowship and worship.
  • Pray for families divided by faith: When one member follows Christ, entire households can be torn apart. Pray for reconciliation, protection, and that whole families would come to know Jesus.
  • Christian witness: Ask that Egyptian believers—both Coptic and Muslim background believers—would reflect Christ’s love boldly and wisely among their Muslim neighbors.
  • Transformation of whole communities: Pray that God would soften hearts across Egypt’s cities and villages, turning opposition into openness, fear into freedom, and rejection into acceptance—until whole families and communities of people come to know and obey Him.
