Hope in the Waiting:
Afghans in India

Day 17: Hope in the Waiting: Afghans in India

Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, … – Matthew 25:34-35

Approximately 20,000 Afghan nationals currently reside in India, the majority of them refugees who fled armed conflict and political instability in Afghanistan. Most live in densely populated areas of South Delhi, such as Lajpat Nagar and Bhogal. For many, India serves as a temporary refuge rather than their intended destination. Some are awaiting approval for resettlement in countries like the United States or Canada, while others who have already been denied must rebuild their lives in India, where legal protections are limited and economic opportunities are scarce.

Without legal permission to work, and with few schools willing to enroll their children, life for Afghan families in India abounds with frustration and fear for the future. Yet in this space of waiting, God is at work.

A small group of Indian believers has chosen not to look away. Instead, they’ve opened their hearts and hands to serve these refugee families. They teach math, English, and computer skills, helping adults and youth gain tools for employment. They offer skills-development classes, distribute food and hygiene kits, and, most importantly, they extend friendship.

Amid these practical expressions of love, something even more powerful is taking root—Bible studies in Afghan languages, where seekers can explore the story of Jesus in their heart language.

One ministry leader shared, “We’ve built deep relationships with Afghans here in India. Through that trust, many have heard about Jesus for the first time. Please pray that more families will encounter His love through our programs.”

In a country where both Muslims and Christians are small minorities, rising Hindu nationalism has stirred tension and hostility toward both groups. Yet, in the midst of these challenges, the light of Christ continues to shine—one refugee, one relationship, one act of love at a time.

HOW WE CAN PRAY

  • Pray for hope and stability: Ask God to comfort Afghan refugees living in uncertainty and waiting for resettlement. Pray that they will find peace, dignity, and purpose even while far from home.
  • Pray for open doors: Many Afghans are not allowed to work or attend school. Pray for God to make a way for education, employment, and opportunities that will sustain their families.
  • Pray for the witness of believers: Lift up the Indian Christians who serve Afghan families through classes, food aid, and friendship. Pray that their love will clearly reflect Jesus and open hearts to the gospel.
  • Pray for healing and restoration: Many refugees carry trauma from war, loss, and displacement. Ask the Lord to bring emotional and spiritual healing through His presence.
  • Pray for peace and protection: Intercede for safety amid rising religious tensions in India. Pray that both Afghan Muslims and Afghan believers will experience God’s protection and that His peace will prevail in their communities.
