And this gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in the whole world. – Matthew 24:14a

Beijing, the capital of the People’s Republic of China, is a sprawling metropolis and one of the world’s most populous capital cities, home to over 21 million residents. The majority of the population are Han Chinese, with Hui (Chinese Muslims), Manchus, and Mongols being the largest minority groups.

With a history spanning more than 3,000 years, Beijing seamlessly blends ancient heritage with modern development. One of its most iconic landmarks is Tiananmen Square, a vast pedestrian plaza and a site of significant historical and political events. Adjacent to the square is the Forbidden City, a magnificent complex of palaces that served as China’s political and ceremonial center for over 500 years.

On the west side of Tiananmen Square stands the Great Hall of the People, an immense structure spanning 1.85 million square feet—equivalent to two city blocks. It serves as the venue for the National People’s Congress and houses key government offices.

While government-approved churches exist in Beijing, authorities closely monitor their activities. Persecution of underground house churches has intensified since 2019, with many being shut down and their leaders arrested. The COVID-19 pandemic further restricted house churches’ ability to gather and operate.

Persecution of the underground Christian church has increased since 2019, with many house churches closed and their leaders arrested.

HOW YOU CAN PRAY

  • Pray for the exponential growth of house churches in Beijing, despite the increasing restrictions imposed by the Communist Party. As the Party’s control tightens over the population and the flow of information, ask God to grant grace and greater freedom for Christians in the city.
  • Since Beijing is home to key government offices, pray over the people in those offices; pray for their salvation.
  • Pray against the persecution of house churches, asking that those who persecute them would be drawn to Jesus, seeking the truth that can only be found in His Word.
  • Pray for the imprisoned house church leaders and their families, that they would experience God’s strength and peace. Ask that the underground church would continue to thrive and spread, even in the face of opposition.
