Bhutan is a small Buddhist kingdom nestled in the Himalayas. Tibetan Buddhism is deeply embedded in the culture. While it is often seen as one of the happiest places on earth, many Bhutanese people live in fear. Their fears revolve around appeasing local deities and using religious rituals to ward off evil. 

Elderly people can frequently be seen in trance-like states, spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras, hoping for a better situation in the afterlife.

Bhutan’s isolation is due not only to its rugged terrain but also its wariness of outsiders. Visas cost $250 per day, and visitors must always be accompanied by a registered guide. Special permits are required to visit temples or other significant sites.

Christianity is severely restricted in Bhutan. Converting to Christianity can result in loss of citizenship, job, access to electricity and water, and other benefits such as free education and health care. 

Hosting a house church or even meeting with friends to share the love of Jesus can lead to imprisonment. Currently, there is a small group (less than 1,000) of Tibetan Buddhists who have embraced Jesus.
