The Best Gift in Burkina Faso

Day 4: The Best Gift in Burkina Faso

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. John 1:9-10

Burkina Faso faces ongoing challenges from terrorist groups that spread fear, and radicals who seek to divide the population. Yet most people in Burkina Faso long for peace, and deeply appreciate leaders who advocate for social unity.

Recently, an evangelical bishop and his newly elected team began reaching out across their community. They visited local authorities and leaders of other Christian denominations to introduce themselves and build strong relationships. Recognizing the importance of interfaith dialogue, they also sought to engage the Muslim community.

Choosing a Friday when many worshippers would be present, the bishop and his team visited a local mosque. At the conclusion of prayers, they were warmly welcomed inside. The Islamic cleric asked the purpose of their visit. The bishop replied, We came to introduce our new team and to express our desire for good cooperation with the Muslim community.

Addressing the gathered congregation, the bishop encouraged unity: We have so much in common. We all share this homeland of Burkina Faso. He then presented the imam with a Bible. The cleric received it with respect, saying, This is the best gift we have received today, because it is the Word of God. It is also a holy book—worth more than money.

HOW WE CAN PRAY

  • Peace and security: Pray for protection from terrorist groups and radicals, and for an end to violence that threatens communities. Pray for those working for peace and unity in Burkina Faso.
  • Opportunities to share the gospel: Pray for Christians to have opportunities to offer the Word of God to their Muslim friends.
  • Strength for believers: Pray for courage, perseverance, and boldness for Christians who seek to live out their faith amidst challenges.
  • Dreams and visions: Pray that Muslims who read the Word of God will have Jesus revealed to them. Ask God to give them dreams and visions of Him, drawing them to Him.
