Day 27: Finding Jesus in Morocco

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!  2 Corinthians 5:17

The Berbers—also known as the Amazigh—are the indigenous people of North Africa, with a presence in Morocco dating back hundreds of years. During that period, many Berbers practiced Christianity or Judaism, and their kingdoms and tribes played a central role in shaping the region’s culture, language, and trade.. Islam came to the Berbers in the 800s and 900s CE, when Arabic Bedouin people began migrating to North Africa. Berbers quickly integrated Islam into their culture, until the majority of Berbers had become Muslims. Despite centuries of change, Berber identity has endured, and today their traditions, languages, and communities remain a vibrant part of Morocco’s cultural landscape.

*Fawzia, a Berber, shares her miraculous journey to faith: My name is Fawzia. I was born in Morocco, my roots are Berber. I grew up in a household of 11 siblings, raised as Muslims. Every year I celebrated Ramadan, and every day I prayed alongside my father.

But at home, life was anything but peaceful. My parents argued constantly, and each year their fights grew more violent. For years, I prayed desperately for peace—yet nothing changed. Finally, in a moment of frustration and faith, I gave God an ultimatum: “I will pray three more times. If you don’t show yourself to me, I won’t believe anymore.”

That very night, I had a dream that would change everything. I found myself climbing a mountain, feeling both tired and encouraged, urged to keep going. At the summit, I saw a man dressed in white, radiating kindness and surrounded by people filled with joy and peace. I wanted to stay there forever.

When I shared the dream with my family, they dismissed it. So I kept it in my heart, quietly wondering who this man could be.

Life continued, dull and aimless, until a couple moved into our building. They spoke to me about God’s love through Jesus Christ and invited me to a house church. There, I felt God’s presence in a way I never had before. I began reading the Bible in secret, searching to understand who Jesus really was.

Then it hit me—Jesus was the man from my dream. Overwhelmed, I cried out to God, asking Him to release me from my suffering and fill me with His peace.

Today, my life is filled with joy and hope. I pray daily for my family, longing for the day they too will meet Jesus and experience the peace I have found in Him.”

HOW CAN WE PRAY

  • Muslim culture sensitivity: Pray that the Lord will raise up missionaries who are sensitive to the Muslim culture and can effectively help new disciples walk through the challenges of becoming new believers in a predominantly Muslim culture.
  • Pray for protection and guidance: It is illegal for a Moroccan to become a Christian or to evangelize others. Lift up families and individuals who face social pressure or isolation for exploring faith. Pray that God would provide safety, wisdom, and discernment.
  • Pray for access to God’s Word: Pray that Berber people would have opportunities to read the Bible in their own language, understand it, and experience the life-transforming message of Jesus.
  • Lord of the Harvest: Ask the Lord of the harvest to call people who are willing to go to Morocco and share Christ with the Berbers.
  • Laws restricting the gospel: Pray that laws restricting the preaching of the gospel in Morocco will change.
