Light on the Shores of Zanzibar
Day 16: Light on the Shores of Zanzibar
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. – Isaiah 9:2
Tourists flock to Zanzibar for its white-sand beaches, crystal waters, and breathtaking sunsets—a tropical paradise that seems untouched by hardship. But beyond the resorts and palm-lined shores lies a different reality. The people of Zanzibar, 99% Muslim, live within a culture deeply woven with folk Islam and occult traditions. Many seek protection from spirits through rituals and charms, longing for peace that never comes.
For *Masood, those spiritual powers were all too real. He and his family had suffered under the weight of evil spirits for years, seeking help from local magicians but finding no relief. Then one day, Masood heard about Isa al-Masih—Jesus the Messiah—that He had power to set people free.
Desperate for hope, Masood and his family began watching the LUMO films, a vivid portrayal of Jesus’ life told through Scripture. They were captivated. Soon, they started reading the Injil (New Testament) for themselves. As they encountered the words and works of Jesus, something miraculous happened—peace entered their home, and the spiritual oppression lifted. They knew it was Jesus who had done this.
Masood’s father-in-law, who lived in the south of the island, was astonished when he heard that his daughter had been set free—something no witchdoctor had ever been able to accomplish. He wanted to know more. Soon, a small group of seekers began gathering at his home to learn about Jesus through the Injil.
Now, lives are changing. Hearts once bound by fear are being filled with light. Some are preparing for baptism, ready to declare publicly that they have found freedom in Isa al-Masih, the Savior who breaks every chain.
