Healing in Cameroon

Day 15: Healing in Cameroon

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. – Isaiah 53:5

When *Yusuf’s 42-year-old wife went into labor, he was anxious. He worried about how difficult her labor would be because of her age. The nearest government clinic had no doctor, and rumors of corruption and neglect ran deep. So, when a neighbor told him about a Christian hospital nearby, he decided to take the risk and go.

Their experience changed everything.

The Christian midwives cared tenderly for his wife and newborn son, staying by their side day and night. Later, when a cousin fell ill with HIV, the same hospital provided medicine, counseling, and compassion—without asking for a bribe.

Yusuf couldn’t believe such kindness still existed. In this country, which has fewer than five nurses for every 10,000 people, access to healthcare is scarce. Yet, faith-based hospitals like this one serve where others cannot—providing around 40% of all medical care in Cameroon.

As Yusuf kept returning to the hospital, he began to notice something different about the staff. Their honesty, their gentleness, and their willingness to serve everyone—Muslim or Christian—stood out. He wanted to understand what motivated them.

That’s when he met the hospital chaplain, who introduced him to the Jesus Film. Watching the story of Christ unfold, Yusuf felt something stir deep within his heart. This Jesus—who healed the sick and loved the broken—was unlike anyone he had ever known.

Not long after, Yusuf made a decision that would change his life forever. He gave his heart to Christ—the Great Physician who had healed far more than his family’s physical wounds.

HOW WE CAN PRAY

  • Pray for encounters with Christ’s love: Ask God to reveal Himself through the compassion of Christian doctors, teachers, and neighbors so that many Muslims experience His love in practical ways.
  • Pray for access to truth: Many Muslims in Cameroon have limited exposure to the gospel. Pray that they would hear and understand the message of Jesus through Scripture, radio, films, and personal relationships.
  • Pray for unity and courage among believers: Lift up Muslim-background believers, who often face rejection or persecution. Pray that they would stand firm in faith and find safe communities for discipleship.
  • Pray for healing and hope: In regions marked by poverty and limited healthcare, pray that Christian medical ministries would continue to bring both physical and spiritual healing, showing that Jesus cares for every need.
  • Pray for peace and transformation: Cameroon faces ethnic and religious tensions. Pray that the gospel would bring reconciliation among divided communities, and that Muslim families would encounter the peace of Christ.
