Somalia
Day 2: Hope for Somalis in Somalia
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 2 Peter 3:9
Situated at the Horn of Africa, Somalia is home to 17 million people—every one of them officially Muslim. Decades of civil war have left the nation fractured. Its people endure famine, political turmoil, drought, and flooding. Traditionally, many Somalis made their living as nomadic herders, raising sheep and camels for export to the Arab Gulf and beyond. But repeated droughts and poor management have devastated this way of life, forcing countless families to abandon the countryside for overcrowded refugee camps or the capital city.
Clan conflicts have deepened the instability. Among the displaced, hopelessness spreads like a disease. With little access to clean water, nutritious food, or medical care, countless children die from preventable causes. Meanwhile, the terrorist group Al-Shabaab blocks desperately needed international aid. Today, nearly 9 million Somalis face severe hunger.
Amid this suffering, stories of courage and faith emerge. Nehma, abandoned by her husband and left to raise five children alone, has endured hardship upon hardship. Yet, she testifies to the inner peace she found in Jesus and the quiet strength of the small community of believers around her. Her trials grew even heavier when her ex-husband demanded that their son, Sameer, be sent away to work as a servant to his new family. Broken hearted, Nehma prayed fervently for her boy for an entire year until finally Sameer returned. Malnourished and traumatized—yet deeply relieved, the 11 year old was delighted to be reunited with his mother.
HOW WE CAN PRAY
- Salvation and spiritual awakening: Pray that Somalis would encounter Jesus, experience His love, and be open to the gospel in a region where Islam is predominant.
- Protection and safety: Pray for protection from violence, political unrest, and extremist groups that threaten communities throughout Somalia and neighboring regions.
- Provision and relief from hardship: Pray for access to food, clean water, and basic healthcare, especially for those affected by drought, famine, and displacement.
- Strength and perseverance for believers: Pray for courage, wisdom, and resilience for Somali Christians who face persecution or pressure from their families and communities.
- Peace and stability: Pray for political stability, reconciliation between clans and communities, and an end to ongoing conflicts that make daily life dangerous and uncertain.
