All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord; they will bring glory to your name. – Psalm 86:6
Japan, often classified as a traditionally Buddhist nation, has increasingly embraced a post-religious identity. While some Buddhist practices persist—such as maintaining ancestral graves, wearing good luck amulets, and registering births at local Buddhist temples—most Japanese, particularly those under 50, do not actively identify with any religion.
In this highly competitive society, being religious is often perceived as a sign of weakness. Some have described Japan as “a superpower without a moral compass.” This societal detachment, combined with immense pressures, has contributed to a tragically high suicide rate, with over 30,000 lives lost annually, particularly among young people.
Many Japanese adopt a syncretic approach to spirituality, blending elements of Shinto, Buddhism, and animistic or occult practices to form personal belief systems, often without concern for contradictions. A central theme in this spiritual outlook is the belief in the omnipresence of gods, seen in natural elements like stones, trees, clouds, and grass.
Christians remain a small minority in Japan. Access to Bibles and faith-based resources is limited, and many pastors—already few in number—are elderly, unable to retire due to a lack of successors. The Christian community in Japan is predominantly composed of women, as the demanding work culture leaves men with little time for religion. This gender imbalance reinforces the misconception that church is primarily a space for women, further deterring male participation and inevitably perpetuating the cycle.
