JAN 29 | BUDDHIST DIASPORA

You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt
Deuteronomy 10:19

Many Buddhists live in poverty. Children are sometimes sold to settle debts and alcoholism is a dire and widespread problem. Life is often seen as a constant effort to “make merit” in the hope of bettering their circumstances.

When opportunities to work or study abroad arise, young Buddhists often seize them, sometimes with the help of relatives who have already relocated. Many young women marry foreign nationals and move to their countries.

However, upon arriving in their new location, many find it difficult to integrate into the new culture. The language and customs can be vastly different, leading to feelings of isolation. Due to language and cultural barriers, they are often ignored or discriminated against.

Buddhist temples may offer some familiar rituals, but the monks are unable to ease the loneliness and frustration that many experience.

Many Buddhists are open to discussing spiritual matters if someone would simply take the time to listen and interact.

Have you thought about how you might connect with Buddhists in your community to share your personal testimony of Jesus and the message of the gospel?

HOW YOU CAN PRAY

  • Pray for an understanding of the EXCLUSIVITY of the gospel. Pray that Buddhists would understand that salvation comes through Christ alone.
  • Pray that they would discover the hope of eternal life through Christ.
  • Pray that Christ followers would reach out to Buddhists in their communities and share the love of Christ authentically.
  • Pray that believers from Buddhist backgrounds living abroad will grow into committed disciples and share their faith with their families back home, leading them to become disciples as well.
