JAN 26 | BANGKOK
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
1 Chronicles 16:24
Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, is known for its rich cultural heritage, bustling streets, and modern skyline. It is a hub for commerce, tourism, and culture, blending traditional Thai elements with global influences. The city is renowned for its ornate temples such as Wat Arun, Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), and Wat Pho, home to the Reclining Buddha. The Grand Palace, a historic architectural masterpiece, is a symbol of Bangkok’s regal past. The juxtaposition of historic temples and contemporary skyscrapers is a defining feature.
The Chao Phraya River flows through the city, lined with markets, temples, and luxury hotels, offering picturesque views and river cruises. Floating markets, such as Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa, although located just outside of Bangkok, are often associated with the city in a tourism context. These bustling markets reflect its historic ties to water-based commerce. The city’s lively street food scene is world-famous, with dishes like Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong, and Mango Sticky Rice delighting both locals and visitors alike.
Bangkok is also a modern hub with shopping malls, a vibrant nightlife, and iconic skyscrapers such as the MahaNakhon. Its diversity and dynamic energy make it one of the most visited cities in the world.
Bangkok has experienced rapid growth over the past 30 years. A significant percentage of its population is under 20, with many young people migrating from rural areas for work and education. The city faces some serious challenges, namely the active sex and human trafficking trades. Despite government efforts, over 600,000 trafficking victims are estimated to be in Thailand, many of whom are children.
Approximately 94% of Bangkok’s population is Buddhist. While the percentage can vary slightly depending on the source and year of data, it consistently represents the overwhelming majority of the city’s residents.
HOW YOU CAN PRAY
- Pray for the gospel to effectively permeate this culture of Buddhism, spiritism, and the occult.
- Pray for moral conviction to fall on those who oppress others for profit via the sex trade.
- Pray for explosive growth in the church to reach all 80,000 villages.
- Pray for Christian outreach to Buddhist monks, who hold positions of great honor in society. Many monks are sincere seekers of truth and may be open to hearing and receiving the gospel.
- Pray that Thailand’s religious freedom, which is greater than that in much of Southeast Asia, will be preserved and continue to thrive.
