Indo-Caribbean Hindu Diaspora

Hindu Communities Spread Across the Caribbean

Home to the Largest Hindu Populations

During the era of indentured labor migration from South Asia, more than half a million individuals were transported to the Caribbean. Approximately 85% of this early diaspora were Hindus, primarily from North India. While some returned to South Asia after completing their contracts, the vast majority chose to remain.

Under British, French, and Dutch colonial rule, these laborers were sent to work mainly on sugarcane plantations in territories such as Trinidad, Jamaica, British Guiana (now Guyana), Martinique, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Suriname. Over time, Hindu communities spread across the Caribbean, gradually adapting to and integrating with the region’s diverse cultures.

This interaction led to a unique expression of Hinduism, shaped by local influences yet deeply rooted in Indian traditions. It became a recognized and vibrant part of Caribbean society, reflecting the cultural richness of the region.

In more recent decades, with the relaxation of immigration policies in North America and elsewhere, many Indo-Caribbean Hindus migrated again—this time to the United States, Canada, and beyond. These communities are often described as a “double diaspora,” preserving elements of both their Indian origins and the cultural synthesis developed during their time in the Caribbean.

Today, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana are home to the largest Hindu populations descended from the original indentured laborers. In each of these nations, Hindus comprise roughly 20% of the population—amounting collectively to over half a million people.

“For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea”. Habakkuk 2:14

Pray that followers of Jesus who live in or near Hindus in these communities will be emboldened to share their love of Jesus with their Hindu neighbors. (Mark 4:21-22)

Pray that Hindus living in the Caribbean region will have profound encounters with the Holy Spirit, and that the truth of Jesus’s great love for them will be made clear.
(John 14:15-17)

Pray God will do a work through entire Hindu family networks and that they will receive invitations to enter Christ’s Kingdom to celebrate the marriage supper of the Lamb.
(Revelation 19:9)
